In an increasingly crowded beauty industry, skincare brands that prioritize intention, quality, and authenticity continue to stand out. Among them is Natura, founded by Katja, a brand bringing a thoughtful and refined approach to modern skincare. Rooted in the belief that skincare should feel both effective and personal, the brand focuses on creating products that combine care, simplicity, and purpose.
In this edition of Ajoke Brown Media’s Skincare Spotlight, we speak with Katja about the inspiration behind her brand, her approach to formulation, the evolving global skincare landscape, and what beauty means to her beyond the surface.

What inspired you to start your skincare brand?
As a biologist, I’ve always been fascinated by the power of natural resources and the incredible potential they hold. Creating skincare products from nature felt like a very natural path for me, combining my scientific background with my passion for sustainable innovation.
What inspires me most is the idea of creating value through nature. I strongly believe that long-term nature conservation is only possible when local communities can benefit from and value the natural resources around them. In Namibia, the use of indigenous nuts and seeds can create economic opportunities while encouraging the protection of these unique ecosystems.
I’m also continually amazed by the oils and botanicals we work with. There is something extraordinary about knowing that these powerful ingredients come from some of the harshest environments on earth — the Namibian desert. The resilience of these plants, thriving under extreme conditions, is reflected in the remarkable properties they offer for skincare.
How would you describe your approach to skincare and formulation?
My approach to skincare is rooted in simplicity — I truly believe that less is more. Effective skincare doesn’t need to be complicated or overloaded with unnecessary ingredients.
Our formulations are intentionally minimalistic, free from cheap fillers and unnecessary water dilution. Every single ingredient is carefully selected because it serves a specific purpose and delivers real benefits to the skin.
We combine traditional African botanical knowledge with modern formulation science to create products that are both effective and gentle. The goal is to develop skincare that works in harmony with the skin while remaining respectful of nature and the extraordinary ingredients we source.

What makes your brand stand out in today’s global skincare market?
What makes Natura Africa unique is our authentic African identity.
African skincare ingredients are extraordinary, yet many are still overlooked internationally. We focus on telling the true story behind these ingredients — where they come from, the communities connected to them, and their remarkable skin benefits.
Our brand is not about following trends. It’s about creating timeless skincare rooted in sustainability, transparency, and real efficacy.
Our philosophy “From Africa, For Africa” also reflects our commitment to giving back and building long-term impact.
Can you share 2–3 of your hero products and what makes them special?
One product I personally love is our pure Rosehip Oil from Lesotho. My own skin responds incredibly well to it, and beyond its beautiful skin benefits, I’m deeply inspired by where it comes from. There’s something special about working with ingredients that are so closely connected to a specific landscape and community.
One of our bestsellers is our Anti-Aging Facial Oil. What makes it so remarkable is that it delivers visible results without relying on added vitamin C or other trend-driven “hero” actives. Its effectiveness comes from the natural power of carefully selected African oils, especially manketti oil, which I believe is still hugely underrated in skincare. It’s incredibly nourishing, supports skin elasticity, and helps soften the appearance of fine lines.
Another standout product is our Calming Balm. We’ve received so much positive feedback from customers struggling with sensitive or compromised skin. Some people who had previously relied on cortisone-based treatments told us they experienced real relief using this balm. The combination of baobab oil and buchu oil is exceptionally soothing and has shown wonderful results for skin concerns like eczema and psoriasis. It’s one of those products that really reminds us why we do what we do.
Are there specific ingredients you love working with, and why?
Absolutely. At the heart of Natura Africa are our five key ingredients, all sourced from Southern Africa: marula, manketti, kalahari melon seed, baobab, and ximenia oil. Our entire product philosophy evolves around these extraordinary oils because each of them offers unique benefits for the skin while telling a story of Africa’s rich botanical heritage.
What I love most about these oils is their versatility and natural potency. They are deeply nourishing, rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, and have been valued for generations for their ability to protect and restore the skin. They prove that nature often provides exactly what the skin needs — without unnecessary complexity.
Another ingredient I’m especially passionate about is bulbinella extract. It’s often compared to aloe vera because of its soothing and hydrating properties, but in many ways, it offers even greater skin benefits. It has been traditionally used by the San people for centuries, yet it remains largely undiscovered in modern skincare. I find that incredibly fascinating. It’s a beautiful example of how much wisdom exists in traditional African botanical knowledge, and it has wonderful calming effects, especially for sensitive or irritated skin.
Who is your ideal customer, and what skin concerns do you focus on?
Our ideal customer is someone who values mindful skincare.
They care about what they put on their skin, appreciate clean and effective formulations, and want products with authenticity and purpose.
We focus mainly on hydration, skin barrier support, sensitivity, dryness, and restoring natural glow — concerns that often stem from overcomplicated skincare routines.
What has your journey been like building a skincare brand as a founder?
It has been incredibly rewarding, but also a journey of constant learning.
Building a skincare brand means balancing creativity with science, business strategy with purpose, and passion with persistence.
One of the most meaningful parts has been shaping a brand that reflects my values: quality, integrity, sustainability, and connection to Africa.
Like every founder journey, there have been challenges, but each step has strengthened the vision behind Natura Africa.
How do you see skincare evolving globally in the next few years?
I believe skincare is moving toward intentional simplicity.
Consumers are becoming more informed and selective. They want fewer products, better ingredients, and greater transparency.
I also see a growing appreciation for regionally rooted ingredients and authentic sourcing stories.
African botanicals will play an increasingly important role in the future of skincare because they offer both efficacy and sustainability.
What does beauty mean to you personally?
To me, beauty is authenticity.
It’s about feeling comfortable in your own skin and supporting its health rather than chasing perfection.
True beauty is confidence, simplicity, and self-care that comes from respect — for yourself, for nature, and for the stories behind the products you use.
What’s next for your brand?
We’re focused on growing Natura Africa thoughtfully and intentionally.
This includes expanding our product range, strengthening our presence in Namibia, South Africa, and Europe, and building partnerships with lodges and wellness spaces that align with our philosophy.
We’re also committed to deepening our social impact initiatives and creating opportunities to give back to communities in Africa.
The future is about growth with purpose — staying true to our roots while sharing African skincare excellence with the world.
